You spend 40 hours a week sitting next to your coworkers and still feel like you barely know them. Meanwhile, a group of random strangers pretending to slay dragons on a Tuesday night can become best friends for life.

Crazy, right? But what if we could actually bring a bit of that magic into the workplace?

A new study in the Journal of Community & Applied Social Psychology surveyed 305 D&D players to figure out why these groups feel so tight-knit. The results explain a lot:

🎲 Connection isn't about time spent, it's about what you actually do together. Players logged way fewer hours with their D&D groups than with friends or family, yet rated the vibe and positivity almost identically (8.62 vs. 8.63 out of 10).

🎲 Belonging isn't just a "nice-to-have", it's the secret sauce. Unsurprisingly, players who felt included in their gaming groups also reported better mental well-being overall.

Now, imagine bringing that exact same energy to your work crew.

Even a quick lunch-break session gives coworkers a low-stakes way to solve problems, uncover each other's hidden strengths, and hype each other up.

Plus, there’s a cool concept in roleplaying called "bleed-out"—it’s when the emotions and bonds you build in-game leak over into real life.

Sure, the dragon is fake, but the real-life trust, laughs, and camaraderie stick around long after you close your laptop. Playing D&D together isn't just talking about teamwork; you're actually living it.

This is literally empathy and communication building, in practice. (Show me where a compliance training or a trust fall did that.)

Want to see what this looks like in practice?

If you're curious about bringing this to your own team, come hang out with me for a free, live D&D at Work info session this Thursday, October 29, at 6 PM ET.

We’ll break down:

  • Team building vs. team development: Why classic "trust falls" miss the mark and what actually works.

  • The science of collaborative play: What the research says about gaming, teamwork, and real-world productivity.

  • Work D&D vs. Home D&D: How we tweak the game so it actually makes sense for the office.

  • Leadership Game Master Training: How managers and facilitators can step up and run these sessions themselves.

See you around the table!
